Action Potential
An electrical impulse that occurs when sodium (Na) ions rush into the neuron and potassium (K) ions rush out.
Synaptic Communication
The process by which a sending neuron transmits neurotransmitters through the axon, which are then captured by the dendrites of a receiving neuron.
Reuptake
The process by which a neuron reabsorbs neurotransmitters that are stuck in the synapse.
SSRI
Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, a class of drugs that increase serotonin levels by inhibiting its reuptake in the brain.
Synaptic Cleft
The fluid-filled space between the sending and receiving neurons, not an open space.
Serotonin
A neurotransmitter that regulates mood and sleep; excessive levels can lead to mood swings and manic phases in bipolar disorder.
Dopamine
A neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward; excessive intake is linked to schizophrenia and hallucinations.
Acetylcholine
A neurotransmitter involved in muscle movement, which is affected in conditions like Parkinson's disease.
Triune Brain Concept
The theory that the human brain evolved in three parts, but functions as a single integrated network.
Neural Pruning
The process by which the brain eliminates unnecessary connections, refining its structure and function over time.
