Equation
A mathematical statement that asserts the equality of two expressions, typically containing variables. It can be solved to find the values of the variables that make the statement true.
Variables
Symbols that represent unknown quantities in equations or mathematical expressions, allowing for general formulas and solutions.
Slope
The measure of the steepness or incline of a line, defined as the ratio of the change in the y-coordinate to the change in the x-coordinate between two points on the line.
Slope-intercept
form of a linear equation represented as y=mx+b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
Point-slope
form of a linear equation represented as y - y1 = m(x - x1),wherem is the slope and (x1, y1) is a specific point on the line.
Substitution
A way of solving a system of equations with two variables. Write all of the variables in the terms of one of the variables. The solve normally with the one variable.
For example:
x+y=10
x-y=2
x=2+y
2+y+y=10
2y=8
y=4
x+4=10
x=6.
Combination
A way of solving a system of equations with two variables. Combine the equations in a specific way, so one of the variables is cancelled.
For example:
x+y=10
x-y=2
(x+y)+(x-y)=12
2x=12
x=6
6+y=10
y=4.
