Nutrition Care
A systematic group of professional activities that aim to identify nutritional needs and provide care to address these needs.
Nutrition Care Process (NCP)
A standardized framework of professional activities for the provision of nutrition care established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
Diaita
The Greek word meaning "way of life," from which the term 'diet' is derived.
Dietetics
The application of the science of nutrition to the human being in health and disease, integrating principles from food, nutrition, management, and communication.
Dietitian
A qualified and regulated health professional who assesses, diagnoses, and treats dietary and nutritional problems at an individual and public health level.
Diet Therapy
The practical application of nutrition as a preventive or corrective treatment of a disease by changing the patient’s normal diet to meet altered requirements.
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)
A nutrition-based treatment provided by a registered dietitian nutritionist that includes a nutrition diagnosis, therapeutic services, and counseling services to manage disease.
Nutritional Status
The physiologic state or condition of an individual based on the balance between the individual’s intake and unique requirement.
Nutrient Intake
The amount of a nutrient absorbed into the body from foods, beverages, medications, and supplements, which depends on the amount consumed, bioavailability, and digestive capacity.
Nutrition Screening
A test or examination used to identify clients who currently have or are at risk for nutrition problems to determine if they require the services of nutrition professionals.
MUST (Malnutrition Universal Screening Tool)
A screening tool used to calculate the overall risk of malnutrition based on BMI, unplanned weight loss, and acute disease effects.
Nutrition Assessment
A systematic method for obtaining, verifying, and interpreting data needed to identify nutrition-related problems, their causes, and significance.
Anthropometric Measurements
Data including height, weight, BMI, growth pattern indices, weight history, waist circumference, and waist-to-hip ratio used in assessment.
Biochemical Data
Information derived from laboratory data, such as vitamin levels, and medical tests or procedures used during nutrition assessment.
Nutrition-Focused Physical Findings
Assessment data covering physical appearance, muscle and fat wasting, swallow function, and appetite.
Food/Nutrition-Related History
Data collection regarding food and nutrient intake, medication use, knowledge/beliefs, physical activity, and food availability.
24-hour recall
A retrospective dietary intake assessment method requiring individuals to remember specific foods and amounts consumed in the previous 24 hours.
Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ)
A retrospective review of intake based on the frequency (per day, week, or month) that specific food groups are consumed.
Food Diary
A daily food record where an individual documents dietary intake as it occurs to minimize errors from incomplete memory.
Nutrition Diagnosis
The identification and labeling of an existing nutrition problem by a practitioner, which is distinct from a medical diagnosis.
PES Statement
A structured format for communicating a nutrition diagnosis: [Problem (P)] related to [Etiology (E)] as evidenced by [Signs/Symptoms (S)].
Etiology
The root cause or contributing risk factors identified in a nutrition diagnosis, typically linked by the phrase "related to."
Signs and Symptoms
The data or indicators used to determine a nutrition diagnosis, linked to the etiology by the phrase "as evidenced by."
Nutrition Intervention
A purposely planned action designed to change a nutrition-related behavior, risk factor, or environmental condition to resolve or improve a nutrition diagnosis.
Nutrition Prescription
A detailed description of the nutrient needs of a client, including recommended needs for energy, protein, fluid, or specific nutrients like sodium or potassium.
Nutrition Education
A formal process to instruct or train a client in a skill or impart knowledge to help them voluntarily manage food and nutrition choices.
Nutrition Counselling
A collaborative, supportive process to establish priorities, goals, and action plans that acknowledge responsibility for self-care to treat conditions and promote health.
Coordination of Care
The domain of intervention involving consultation with, referral to, or coordination with other health care providers, institutions, or agencies.
Nutrition Monitoring and Evaluation
The final step of the NCP used to measure the amount of progress made and determine if nutrition-related goals/expected outcomes are being met.
