Eukarya domain
The biological domain that includes microbes like protozoa and fungi.
Protozoa
Microscopic eukaryotic organisms that belong to the Eukarya domain.
Fungi
Eukaryotic microbes categorized by having cell walls that differ from those of bacteria.
Bacterial cell walls
Structures unique to bacteria that are different from those found in fungal cells.
Antibiotics
Substances used for bacterial infections that do not affect fungi due to structural differences.
Eukaryotic microbes
Major groups of organisms such as protozoa and fungi discussed in the lecture.
Prokaryotic microbes
Organisms that are compared to eukaryotic microbes to understand their differences.
Major groups of eukaryotic microbes
Categories of microbes discussed in class within the Eukarya domain.
Protists
A group of eukaryotic organisms whose basic characteristics are emphasized in the chapter.
Naegleria fowleri
A protozoan pathogen requiring description of its features and infections.
Acanthamoeba
A type of protozoan pathogen that causes specific infections.
Entamoeba histolytica
A protozoan pathogen included in the list of pathogens to describe.
Plasmodium
A protozoan pathogen and a study focus for eukaryotic microbes.
Cryptosporidium
A protozoan pathogen discussed for its clinical and biological features.
Toxoplasma gondii
A protozoan pathogen known for causing specific infections.
Giardia
A medically important protozoan pathogen reviewed in the study points.
Sepate
A fungal structural term used to differentiate certain fungal hyphae from nonseptate ones.
Nonseptate
A descriptor for fungal hyphae that lacks the cross-walls found in sepate types.
Dimorphic
A characteristic of fungi describing their ability to exist in more than one form.
Four groups of fungi
The classification of fungi containing groups that include human pathogens.
Ascomycota
A group of fungi specifically noted for containing medically relevant species on slide 19.
Valley fever
An infection identified in the notes as being caused by Cryptococcus immitis.
Cryptococcus immitis
The organism listed as the causative agent of Valley fever.
Histoplasmosis
A fungal infection caused by Histoplasma capsulatum.
Histoplasma capsulatum
The fungal pathogen identified as the cause of Histoplasmosis.
