What is Mass?
a measurement of how much matter an object contains
mass changes when the amount of matter changes
Unit for Mass?
gram
formula for mass
Mass = Density Ă— Volume
Instruments used to measure Mass?
electronic scale and tripple beam balance
How to use a Triple Beam Balance?
set wait to zero
calibrate
place object on balance
move weights
How to use Electronic Scale?
press power (wait)
M set scale to grams (0.00g)
practice tare
How to complete Tare method on electronic scale?
place empty container
press T (removes mass of container)
add small objects
What is Matter?
any substance that has mass and takes up space by having volume.
What is not Matter?
Any type of energy
ex; Sunlight, Gravity, Heat, Reflection, space, radiation, sound, time, etc.
What is Weight?
a measure of the effect gravity has on an object
How are mass and weight different?
Mass is the total amount of matter, or "stuff," in an object.
Weight is the force of gravity on an object.
Mass always stays the same, but weight can change depending on how much gravity is acting upon an object.
gravity effects weight not mass
What is Volume?
a measurement of how much space an object takes up
An object’s volume is the amount of space it takes up
formula for volume
m/d
LxWxH
Unit for Volume?
cm3 - lxwxh
mL - liquids or irregular shapes
Instruments used to measure Volume?
beakers, gradulated cylinder
What is the water displacement method using a graduated cylinder
When a cylinder is submerged in the water it pushes water out of the way. If you measure the amount the water level increases, you can find the volume of the water pushed out of the way.
What is Density?
a drprived property of matter
The density of an object is its mass per unit of volume. Dense objects feel very heavy for their size, while objects with low density feel very light for their size.
formula for density
d = m/v
Unit for Density?
g/cm3
What is the Metric System?
standerize world wild
The metric system, or more accurately the International System of Units
meter - length
liter - volume
gram - mass
what is water displacement
the volume of an irregular object can be measured by how much water it displaces in a graduated cylinder
the volume of water that is displaced by an object dropped in the water
Does mass alone determine whether an object will float or sink?
The mass alone does not determine whether an object will float or sink because the volume would also be needed.
