Sexual reproduction
A form of reproduction involving the fusion of male and female gametes to produce offspring.
Zygote
The initial cell formed when two gamete cells join through fertilisation.
Asexual reproduction
Reproduction involving only one parent that produces offspring genetically identical to the parent.
Internal fertilisation
The fusion of gametes occurring inside the body of an animal, such as in mammals.
External fertilisation
The fusion of gametes occurring outside the animal's body, common in some fish and amphibians.
Uterus
The hollow, muscular organ in females where a fetus develops during pregnancy.
Endometrium
The lining of the uterus that thickens during the menstrual cycle to prepare for a possible pregnancy.
Placenta
An organ that develops during pregnancy to provide oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and remove waste products.
Gametes
The male (sperm) and female (ova) sex cells produced for reproduction.
Gestation
The period of development of a fetus inside the uterus (in humans, approximately 40 weeks).
