EBRA

March 9th, 1933 

-Preceded by a federally enforced 8 day bank holiday 

-An attempt to stabilize the banking system  

-Expanded power of the gov’t over banks, also allowed the feds to assess whether a bank was solid enough to reopen or whether they needed RFC funds 

CCC

Apr. 5th 1933 

-Public work program 

-Provided young, unemployment and unmarried men with jobs 

-Jobs were unskilled and manual labor based, conservation projects   

-Building rural roads, planting trees, forest fire fighting  

-Most uneducated and malnourished

NIRA

June 16th, 1933 

-Guaranteed collective bargaining rights for industrial workers 

-Also focused on business cooperation within an industry, to make sure prices were set reasonably for everyone 

-Biggest action was creating the NRA which fought to protect the average employee and maintain fair business practices   

AAA

-, May 12th, 1933 

-Tried to raise the price of crops to pre war prices in order to give farmers more profit 

-Offered farmers subsidies (money) to either not use all of their land, limit crop production, or kill off excess livestock 

SEC

-“register, regulate, and oversee brokerage firms, transfer agents, and clearing agencies as well as the nation’s securities self regulatory organizations” (e.g., the New York Stock Exchange). 

-Required companies on the stock exchange to release information on earnings to the public, more transparency 

-A way to make sure the common people who engaged with the stock market were not being taken advantage of 

TVA

Late May, 1933 

-Focused on the Tennessee River Valley and modernizing it, hit very hard during the depression

-Built hydroelectric dams to provide electricity to the poor in Tennessee, also flood control to improve land usage 

-All this work provided jobs as well 

WPA

--The__ was the largest and most diverse of the New Deal public works programs.  It was created to alleviate the mass unemployment of the Great Depression and by the time it was terminated in 1943, the __ had put 8.5 million Americans back to work.

-The majority of __ projects built infrastructure, such as bridges, airports, schools, parks, and water lines.  

-Local gov’t kicked in some $, Feds did the rest

SSA

- 1935 

-Most Americans know _______ for its old-age pension system, but the act also addressed unemployment benefits, aid to dependent children, maternal and child welfare, public health services, and aid to the blind 

-It launched what would be called ‘the welfare state’ or ‘the social safety net’ of the postwar era 

-Government needed to provide for people when they struggled
