Binary Fission
A method of asexual reproduction in prokaryotic cells where the cell divides into two identical cells.
Exponential Growth
A phase of growth in which a population doubles in number at regular intervals.
Generation Time
The time it takes for a population to double.
Biofilms
Polysaccharide-encased communities of bacterial cells that provide structural organization.
Psychrophile
An organism that thrives in cold environments, typically between -5°C and 15°C.
Thermophile
An organism that prefers hot environments, typically between 45°C and 70°C.
Obligate Aerobe
An organism that requires oxygen for survival.
Facultative Anaerobe
An organism that can grow in the presence or absence of oxygen.
Limiting Nutrient
A nutrient that is in short supply, restricting the growth of organisms.
Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)
Chemically reactive molecules containing oxygen that can damage cell structures.
Superoxide Dismutase
An enzyme that protects against oxidative stress by inactivating superoxide radicals.
Catalase
An enzyme that decomposes hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen.
Nutritional Requirements
The essential elements and compounds that organisms need for growth and reproduction.
Complex Medium
Growth medium that contains a mixture of organic materials and nutrients.
Selective Medium
A growth medium designed to suppress the growth of some microorganisms while allowing others to grow.
