humans are created to relate personally with God by responding to the Spirit within them and developing inner goodness. strengthened by prayer

to relate with God, people need to grow in the images of God which requires growth in love and goodness and overcoming selfishness and tendencies to do wrong
Developing Virtues
A virtue is a habit of doing what is good, people develop them as they practise living to their ideals and do what they know is right.
4 cardinal virtues
The word ‘cardinal’ comes from Latin word for ‘hinge’. development of all other virtues hinges on the cardinal virtues. Cardinal is an important bishop who serves the Pope, prudence, fortitude, justice, temperance
Prudence
making wise choices and thinking carefully before acting

treating and everyone fairly and giving people what they deserve
Fortitude
having courage and strength to do what is right even when its hard

having self control and not going to extremes

‘Character’ means that a person is so strong in one or more virtues that others can rely
upon them to behave in predictably good ways. can be developed when strong virtues become apart of personality

self mastery means being strong-willed enough to have control over one’s thoughts, emotions and feelings.
Soul
The ‘soul’ is the immortal spirit in each living human person. The human soul is the principle of life within every human person.

eternal happiness with God for those who lived with love and goodness.

People can relate spiritually with them in the same way. Catholics ask Mary and the saints to pray on their behalf to God. They receive many blessings as a result of their prayers.

Sloth – Lazy, unmotivated, avoids responsibility

Pride – Blocks humility and self-awareness, making growth and connection with others or the divine difficult.
Greed – Distracts from spiritual values by overvaluing material wealth and fostering dissatisfaction.
Wrath – Destroys inner peace and compassion, leading to resentment and disconnection.
Envy – Breeds bitterness and prevents gratitude, making it hard to appreciate your own path.
Lust – Turns focus toward physical pleasure over deeper love or spiritual connection.
Gluttony – Leads to overindulgence and dulls the spirit, reducing discipline and clarity.
Sloth – Halts personal growth, causing stagnation and a lack of purpose or meaning.

Pride → Practice humility: acknowledge flaws, be grateful, serve others.
