Respiratory System
The system responsible for the exchange of gases in the body, including the lungs and airways.
Cellular Respiration
The process where cells use oxygen to produce ATP, releasing carbon dioxide as a byproduct.
ATP
Adenosine triphosphate, the energy currency produced in cellular respiration.
Carbon Dioxide
A gas byproduct of cellular respiration.
Aerobic Cellular Respiration
Cellular respiration that occurs in the presence of oxygen.
Nasal Cavity
The passageway where air is warmed, humidified, and filtered before it enters the lungs.
Pharynx
The junction of both food and air; part of the throat.
Trachea
A cylindrical tube with cartilage rings that provides air passage to the lungs.
Epiglottis
The structure that prevents food from entering the trachea during swallowing.
Alveoli
Tiny air sacs in the lungs that facilitate gas exchange.
Surfactant
A substance that reduces surface tension in the alveoli, promoting efficient lung function.
Pulse Oximetry
The monitoring and measurement of a person's pulse and oxygen saturation levels.
Nasal Turbinates
Bony structures within the nasal cavity that regulate inhaled air by warming, moistening, and filtering it.
Adenoids
Lymph tissues located in the throat that help trap and filter out harmful bacteria and viruses.
Tonsils
Special types of lymph tissues in the throat that aid in the immune response.
Bronchi
The main airways that branch off from the trachea and lead into the lungs.
Bronchiole Tubes
Smaller air passages that branch off from the bronchi and carry air into the lungs.
Vibrissae
Coarse hairs located in the nasal vestibule that filter large particles and dust from inhaled air.
