Insolation
The sun's primary source of energy, also known as incoming solar radiation.
Terrestrial radiation
Energy that the ground absorbs from insolation and re-radiates back to the atmosphere.
Latitude
The distance from the equator where temperatures decrease as movement occurs further north or south because the sun's rays hit the Earth at more slanted angles.
Altitude
The height above sea level; temperatures drop as this increases because the air is thinner and cannot retain as much heat.
Distance from the Sea (Oceanity)
A factor affecting climate where coastal areas have milder temperatures because the ocean takes longer to heat up and cool down than land.
Ocean Currents
Continuous movements of sea water, such as the Gulf Stream or Benguela current, that can raise or lower temperatures and affect rainfall of a region.
Relief (Aspect/Mountains)
Mountain ranges that force moisture-heavy air to rise, cool, and condense to cause rain.
Environmental Lapse Rate
The rate at which temperature decreases with height, documented as 0.65∘C/100m.
Dry Adiabatic Lapse Rate
The rate at which the temperature of a parcel of dry air decreases as it rises, documented as 1∘C/100m.
Convectional rain
Rainfall formed when the sun's energy heats the Earth's surface, heating the surrounding air which expands, rises, and cools to dew point.
Dew point temperature
The temperature at which air reaches saturation and condensation occurs, forming water droplets.
Rain shadow
The sheltered, dry side of a mountain range where air descends and warms after losing moisture on the windward side.
Aspect
The direction a slope faces, influencing temperature; for example, a South facing slope is hotter and sunnier than a North facing slope in the Northern Hemisphere.
Woo
An archaic term meaning to court or seek the affection of someone, as used by Juliet regarding Count Paris.
The County Paris
The gallant, young, and noble gentleman whom Juliet's father arranged for her to marry at Saint Peter's Church.
Gallant
A term used by Lady Capulet to describe Count Paris, meaning brave, heroic, or noble-minded.
Benguela current
A specific cold ocean current mentioned that can cause cooler temperatures and create deserts along the coast.
Cumulonimbus
A type of cloud often formed during the process of convectional rain when air rises and cools.
