Mitosis
How do eukaryotic body cells reproduce?
Growth, repair, reproduction in single celled organisms
Why do cells reproduce (divide)?
Chromatin
DNA that is loose and uncoiled when a cell is not dividing.
Chromosomes
DNA that is tightly coiled just before cell division.
12
If there are 6 chromosomes in a cell and the DNA has copied, how many chromatids are there?
Interphase (G1, S, G2), Mitosis, Cytokinesis
What are the phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase
The longest phase of the cell cycle. Includes G1, S, G2.
G1
Period of growth before division
S
DNA replicates during this stage of the cell cycle
G2
Preparation for mitosis
Mitosis
Division of the nucleus.
Cytokinesis
Divison of the cytoplasm.
Spindle fibers
Fibers that help move the chromosomes around by attaching at the centromeres .
To create identical cells. Creates somatic cells.
What is the goal of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
What are the phases of mitosis in order?
Prophase
Phase of mitosis in which nuclear envelope breaks down, centrioles separate and spindle fibers form. Chromosomes are visible.
Metaphase
Phase in mitoisis in which chromosomes line up in the middle (at the equator).
Anaphase
Phase in mitosis in which sister chromatids separate and are pulled apart to opposite ends of the cell (sides of the cell).
Telophase
Phase of mitoiss in which chromosomes uncoil back into chromatin. Two nuclear envelopes reform around chromosomes. Spindle fibers break down.
2
How many cells are produced at the end of mitosis?
The same DNA?
Do blood, muscle, nerve and skin cells have the same or different DNA within one human?
