Cluster
A grouping of objects or phenomena close together on Earth’s surface.
Agglomeration
Intentional clustering of activities or things around a central point or economic growth pole.
Random Pattern
A spatial distribution that shows no identifiable order or logic.
Scattered Distribution
Objects that are ordinarily ordered but appear widely dispersed over an area.
Linear Pattern
A spatial arrangement in a straight line.
Sinuous Pattern
A spatial arrangement that follows a wavy or curving line.
Land Survey Pattern
The layout method used to divide land that later influences property lines and political boundaries.
Metes and Bounds
Pre-1830s land survey method that used natural landscape features as boundaries.
Township and Range System
Rectilinear survey grid based on lines of latitude and longitude.
Long Lot Pattern
Lots with narrow frontage on a road or waterway extending far back in a long, thin shape.
Arithmetic Density
Number of items or people per square unit of total land area.
Physiological Density
Number of people per square unit of arable (farmable) land.
Agricultural Density
Number of farmers per square unit of arable land.
Diffusion Pattern
The manner in which human phenomena spread across Earth’s surface.
Hearth
