Digestion
The process which changes the food we eat into simpler parts to get energy.
Nutrient
An element of food that provides energy for our bodies and is necessary for healthy growth.
Heart
A muscular organ about the size of your fist that keeps blood moving through your body to carry oxygen and nutrients.
Diet
The kind of food that a person eats regularly.
Carbohydrates
Nutrients found in grains, potatoes, bread, and pasta that provide the body with energy.
Proteins
Nutrients found in eggs, fish, meat, and chicken that build up our muscles and help us to grow.
Fats
Nutrients found in vegetable oil, nuts, and butter that provide the body with energy.
Vitamins
Important nutrients that the body needs in small amounts for normal growth and nutrition.
Minerals
Important substances that the body needs for good health by forming strong bones and teeth, such as Calcium Ca and Iron Fe.
Hydrated
Drinking enough water to keep your body working well.
Dehydrated
The state of losing too much water without replacing it, leading to headaches, thirst, and feeling tired or dizzy.
Living organism
The accurate term for humans, animals, and plants within a habitat.
Habitat
The environment where plants and animals normally live and grow.
Interaction
Means to act on one another, occurring between living organisms and non-living things.
Cause
Something that creates a change.
Effect
The change we observe or a result of the cause.
Overgrazing
A harmful environmental change that occurs when goats eat large quantities of grass.
Invasive plant
A plant like the water hyacinth that floats on the water and harms the environment by blocking sunlight and oxygen.
Water cycle
The process of how water changes as it moves around the Earth.
Evaporation
A process in which heat causes liquid to turn into gas and rise up.
Condensation
A process in which gas is cooled off and turns into liquid.
Precipitation
A process in which water vapor in clouds falls back to the Earth as rain, snow, sleet, or hail.
Runoff
When rain flows down the sides of mountains.
Groundwater
When some rain soaks deep into the ground, forming underground rivers.
Spring
Water bubbling up to the surface of the Earth.
Weather
The conditions around us over a short period of time.
Climate
The conditions around us over a long period of time.
Volunteering
How people help their community and others without being paid.
Dams
Structures that stop water from entering a river or canals to prevent severe floods.
