Communication
The process through which people create messages using a variety of modalities and sensory channels to convey meanings within and across contexts.
Process
The ongoing nature of communication that unfolds over time and changes with interactions.
Messages
Packages of information that are created and shared during communication.
Modalities
The various forms or channels through which messages are communicated, such as face-to-face, texting, or emailing.
Sensory Channels
The different senses (auditory, visual, tactile) used to understand messages.
Context
The situation or environment in which communication takes place, often influencing the message's interpretation.
Self-Presentation Goal
The aim to present oneself in a way that influences how others perceive them.
Instrumental Goal
The practical objectives or tasks that one wishes to achieve through communication.
Relationship Goals
The objectives pertaining to the communication needed to build, maintain, or end relationships.
Linear model of communication
An early communication model emphasizing a one-way process from sender to receiver, without feedback.
Interactive communication model
A model that includes two-way communication with feedback between the sender and receiver.
Transactional model

Communication Competence

Appropriateness
The degree to which communication matches the expectations of a situation and context.
Effectiveness
The ability to accomplish communication goals through understanding and clarity.
Ethics
Moral principles guiding communication, ensuring honesty and truthfulness in interactions.
Low Self-Monitors
Individuals who do not monitor their communication behavior, often leading to inappropriate self-disclosure.
High Self-Monitors
Individuals who are highly aware of their communication style and behavior in social contexts.
Mediated Communication
Communication that involves technology, such as texting, phone calls, or social media.
Interpersonal Communication
