Sex
Typically refers to the biological differences between males and females, including reproductive organs and genetic differences.
Gender
A social construct and identity that encompasses psychological, behavioral, social, and cultural aspects of being male or female.
Sexual Orientation
An enduring pattern of emotional, romantic, and/or sexual attractions to individuals of the same or opposite sex.
Intersex
Variations in sex characteristics including chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical differences that do not fit typical definitions of male or female.
Gender Dysphoria
Discomfort or distress caused by a discrepancy between a person's gender identity and their assigned sex at birth.
Demisexual
A person who feels sexually attracted to someone only within the context of a strong emotional connection.
Asexual
A person who does not experience sexual attraction or has little interest in sexual behavior.
Affects of Testosterone
Higher levels are associated with male characteristics, influencing mood, behavior, and motivation.
Gonads
Sex organs that produce gametes (sperm in males and eggs in females), and are crucial in determining gonadal sex.
Phenotypic Sex
Refers to the observable physical characteristics of an individual's sex, including internal and external genitalia.
Gender Identity
Refers to a person's internal understanding and experience of their own gender, which may not align with their biological sex.
Swyer Syndrome
A condition where individuals have XY chromosomes but develop with a female phenotype due to incomplete gonadal development.
Hijra
A recognized third gender community in South Asia, often involved in cultural and religious roles.
Fa'afafine
A recognized gender category in Samoan culture, typically referring to individuals assigned male at birth who embody both male and female traits.
