Addiction
A chronic condition characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use despite harmful consequences.
Blood alcohol content
The concentration of alcohol present in a person's bloodstream, expressed as a percentage.
Cannabis
A drug derived from the hemp plant that contains psychoactive substances affecting mind and body function.
Dependence
A state in which an individual relies on a drug to function normally, experiencing physical or psychological symptoms if the drug is stopped.
Depressant
A class of drugs that slows down the activity of the central nervous system and body functions.
Detoxification
The medical or natural process of clearing toxic substances or drugs from the body.
Nicotine
A highly addictive stimulant found primarily in tobacco products.
Opiate
A drug derived from or chemically related to opium, primarily used for pain relief but with high potential for addiction.
Overdose
The ingestion or application of a drug or other substance in quantities greater than are recommended or medically safe.
Prescription drug
A medication that legally requires a medical prescription from a licensed healthcare professional to be dispensed.
Psychedelic drug
A class of psychoactive substances that alter perception, mood, and cognitive processes, often inducing hallucinations.
Recovery
The ongoing process of overcoming substance addiction and restoring physical, mental, and social health.
Relapse
The return to drug use after a period of abstinence or improvement.
Stimulant
A class of drugs that speeds up the activity of the central nervous system, increasing alertness and energy.
Tolerance
A state where larger doses of a substance are required to produce the same effect previously achieved at lower doses.
Withdrawal
The combination of physical and mental symptoms that occur when a person reduces or stops using an addictive substance.
