Socialization

The lifelong process of learning to behave according to societal norms and expectations.

Age norms

Expectations and rules associated with particular stages of life that dictate what individuals are supposed to do at different ages.

Anticipatory socialization

The process of preparing for future roles before actually entering them.

Resocialization

The process of unlearning old behaviors and learning new ones due to entering a new social environment or role.

Degradation ceremony

A process where individuals lose aspects of their old identity and are given a new identity when entering an institution.

Total institution

An environment where individuals are isolated from society and must follow strict rules set by the institution.

Five milestones of adulthood

Key life events traditionally associated with becoming an adult: completing school, leaving home, becoming financially independent, marrying, and having a child.

Life transitions

The social changes individuals experience as they move through different stages of life, requiring adjustment to new roles and expectations.
