Navigation
The process of determining one's position and planning routes to reach a destination.
Latitude
Imaginary lines that run east-west and measure distance north or south of the equator.
Longitude
Imaginary lines that run north-south and measure distance east or west of the Prime Meridian.
Compass
A magnetized piece of iron that aligns itself with the Earth's magnetic field, pointing to magnetic north.
Dead Reckoning
A method used in navigation to determine one's current position by using a previously determined position.
Sextant
An instrument used for measuring the angular distance between celestial objects and the horizon.
Radio Navigation
A navigation method using radio signals to determine position.
LORAN-C
A long-range navigation system that is no longer used, designed for maritime navigation.
NDB
Non-Directional Beacon; an old electronic navigation aid that helps pilots navigate by pointing to the beacon's location.
ADF
Automatic Direction Finder; an instrument in an aircraft used to determine the direction to a radio beacon.
VOR
Very High Frequency Omni-Directional Range; a type of radio navigation system for aircraft.
ILS
Instrument Landing System; a navigation aid that helps guide aircraft to runways during landing.
GPS
Global Positioning System; a space-based radio-navigation system that provides location and time information.
