What is Angiogenesis?
The process of forming new blood vessels that occurs in the granulation phase of healing in wound repair, or in cancer to feed a tumor.
What does 'approximation' mean in wound care?
Wound edges are touching; all surfaces need to be touching to heal, applicable to wounds healing by 1st or 3rd intention.
What is an avulsion?
A wound that results from tissue being torn away in a large piece; requires healing by secondary intention.
What is Cellulitis?
Inflammation or infection of the cells in tissues characterized by redness, pain, heat, and edema (S.H.A.R.P.).
What is debridement?
The removal of devitalized or dead tissue and foreign material from the wound bed to support healing and reduce infection risk.
What is dehiscence?
The splitting open of a surgical wound (a wound that had been sutured closed).
What is erythema?
Redness of the skin caused by vasodilatation related to inflammation, infection, or injury.
Define exudate.
Fluid that comes from wounds; can be clear (serous), sanguineous (bloody), or purulent (pus).
What is granulation tissue?
Tissue that forms in the wound base, filling in wounds with scar tissue; it is red or pink and has a lumpy appearance.
What is ischemia?
A deficiency of blood supply to an area of tissue or an organ.
What is a laceration?
A wound that is produced by the tearing or cutting of the skin.
What is maceration?
A softening, whitish look to the intact skin around wounds caused by excessive moisture.
What is necrotic tissue?
Dead tissue that usually presents as black or brown, is hard or leathery in texture (eschar), and must be removed for the wound to heal.
What does purulent mean?
Containing or forming pus; usually an opaque white, green, or yellow exudate.
