Learning
A change in behavior that is due to experience.
Classical conditioning
Learning to respond to a new stimulus that has been associated with another stimulus that normally produces the response.
Unconditioned stimulus (US)
A stimulus that automatically elicits a response without prior conditioning.
Unconditioned response (UR)
An innate response to an unconditioned stimulus.
Conditioned stimulus (CS)
A previously neutral stimulus that now elicits a response due to its association with an unconditioned stimulus.
Conditioned response (CR)
A learned response to a stimulus that did not originally elicit the response.
Acquisition
The stage of conditioning in which the association between the unconditioned stimulus (US) and the conditioned stimulus (CS) is being formed.
Generalization
The conditioned response to stimuli that are not the conditioned stimulus but are similar to the CS.
Discrimination
The conditioned response occurs only to a specific stimulus.
Extinction
Not showing the conditioned response anymore because the conditioned stimulus is not again paired with the unconditioned stimulus.
Spontaneous recovery
The reappearance of the conditioned response to the original conditioned stimulus after extinction.
Second order (higher order) conditioning
A new neutral stimulus becomes associated with a previously conditioned stimulus and becomes a new conditioned stimulus.
Conditioned aversion
A classically conditioned association between a conditioned stimulus and an unconditioned stimulus that causes an unpleasant response.
Observational learning
Learning via observation and imitation.
