The Great Compromise

The Great Compromise happened in 1787 during the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia. It was proposed by Roger Sherman and it resolved the debate between the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan by creating a bicameral legislature with proportional representation in the House of Representatives and equal representation in the Senate.

3/5ths compromise

The 3/5ths compromise was a compromise reached during the Constitutional Convention of 1787 in which three-fifths of the slave population would be counted for representation purposes regarding both the distribution of taxes and the apportionment of the members of the United States House of Representatives.

Compromise of 1820

Missouri had wanted to enter the union as slave state. But the North didn’t want the territory to join because it would get rid of the balance in the senate between free and slave states.

  • Results in Missouri joining as slave state and Maine joining in as free state to keep equal.

  • Also resulted in any decision that any future state under the Missouri southern border would become slave state

  • The compromise increased tensions between the slavery debate and was eventually overturned by Kansas Nebraska act

Included a few main parts where:

  • all new states obtained were now under popular sovereignty except California

  • in return the south gets Fugitive Slave Act, that states that northerners are legally obligated to return runaway slaves

  • this compromise helped avoid the civil war but still increased tensions

Kansas and Nebraska Act

  • new states, Kansas and Nebraska attempted to join the union where they will be based under popular sovereignty.

  • Led to break up of Whigs and the rise of Republicans.

  • Resulted in the repealing of the Missouri compromise and Bleeding Kansas begins

Dredd Scott Supreme Court Case Decision

Dred Scott becomes a free slave in the North. He then gets lawyer in efforts to sue.

Results in:

  • Supreme court stating that slaves are not citizens, they are property. To which the constitution protects property.

  • This virtually takes all compromises and throws them out the window, as the supreme court overrules

Compromise of 1877

The big issue is over who won the election, but the government couldn’t figure out who won.

  • Causing the south threaten war again.

  • Republican Hayes get presidency.

  • In return, Democrats get union soldiers to withdraw from south.

  • Democrats takes over power back into the South, allowing them to introduce racist laws such as black codes, and the rise of the KKK
