Flat/Matte Finish
No gloss, surface exhibits a dull, smooth texture with no shine or luster.
Eggshell Finish
Very low luster, compared to the luster of a chicken egg.
Satin Finish
Low-mid range glossiness, presents a smooth, silky gloss compared to the luster of a pearl. May demonstrate fine lines or striations.
Semi-Gloss Finish
Medium luster with a distinct shine and brilliance second only to a high gloss finish.
High Gloss Finish
Most shiny and brilliant of all applications. Generally limited to precious metal offerings in copper and bronze.
Wood Caskets: Unfinished
No exterior finish, stain, varnish, or paint. Best for eco-friendly/natural burial options and religious ideologies such as Orthodox Judaism.
Wood Caskets: Natural Finish
Most popular option, made by applying a stain to highlight and enhance the natural grain and then applying a seal coat to protect the wood.
Wood Caskets: Painted Finish
Not very common.
Laminated Casket
Covered with wood veneer.
Cloth-Covered Casket
can be smooth or embossed, symbol of prestige in the 1800’s but not very common in the modern day.
Broadcloth
twilled, napped, woolen, or worsted fabric, typically made of cotton.
Doeskin/Moleskin
heavy, durable cotton fabric with a short, thick, velvety nap and a suede like appearance. pool tables.
Plush/High Pile
woven cloth with a nap exceeding 1/8th of an inch.
Metal Caskets: Brushed Finish
Typically bronze, copper, and stainless steel, removes surface imperfections. eggshell to high gloss sheen, available in any color.
Metal Caskets: Plated Finish
Resists corrosion/rust, protects base metal, enhanced appearance, reduces cost, applied through electrolysis.
Metal Caskets: Sprayed Finish
Solid colors on carbon steel, color gradients on stainless steel, any sheen.
Sprayed Finish: Crinkled/Wrinkled
Substance that wrinkles when it dries.
Sprayed Finish: Hammertone
Gives the appearance of small indentations.
Inner Panel
Functional or ornamental covering that usually covers the foot end of the casket to conceal the lower half of the body.
Single-Hinged Panel Casket
Half couch with no overlay. Head cap piece with crown is hinged to the rim/ogee.
Slip Panel/Sliptop/Priest Casket
Crown portion of the cap at the head end may be completely removed for the purpose of viewing the deceased from either side of the casket. also a half couch casket.
Elliptical/Oval Casket
Ends designed in a half circle.
Octagonal Casket
8 sides or body panels. Very popular in Australia and Europe.
Flaring Square
Side panel shape is one in which the sides and ends of the casket body panels flare out from the bottom to the top.
State/Vertical Side Square Panel
Body panels and corners at 90 degree angles.
Urnside Panel Shape
Body panels present in the shape of an urn.
Gasket Seal
Most often found on 16 and 18 gauge carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, and copper caskets. not found on coffins or wood caskets.
Gasketed Locking Methods: Threaded Fasteners
A screw type fastener.
Gasketed Locking Methods
End lock, side/front lock, lever lock and threaded fasteners.
Non-gasketed Locking Methods
Latch closure, threaded fasteners, chemical compounds.
Hermetically Sealed
Airtight, impervious to external influence, completely sealed by fusion or soldering. More commonly referred to as a Ziegler case.

Outer Burial Container
Employed to surround and safeguard casketed remains in a grave, including grave boxes and concrete sectionals.
Purpose of a Burial Vault
To support the weight of the earth, limit the intrusion of outside materials, protect the casket itself, contribute to the attractiveness of the cemetery and offer ease of cemetery maintenance.
Long Term/Static Earth Load
Continual loads, including weight of dirt/soil above the container and the force dirt and soil applies to the sides and bottom of the container.
Short Term/Differential/Dynamic/Impact Earth Load
Occurs when work or maintenance is being performed at or near the gravesite.
Vault Linings
ABS, plastic products used in combination with stainless steel, copper, or bronze.
Concrete Burial Vault
A lined and sealed burial receptacle which performs all the functions of the concrete grave liner and in addition is designed and constructed using one or more lining and sealing materials to increase the overall tensile strength of the finished unit and reduce the intrusion of exterior elements.
Burial Vault Linings
ABS, other plastic products used in combo with stainless steel, copper, or bronze. The number of linings is a major selling point.

2900 lbs.
Top Seal Method
uses epoxy compound and tongue-in-groove (butyl tape) design.
Metal Burial Vaults
Reduced weight, made from carbon steel, stainless steel, copper or aluminum, highly durable and significantly lighter in weight than concrete burial vaults.
Air Seal
uses air pressure created by placing the domed lid of the metal burial vault onto the base. diving bell principle.
Double Seal
uses air seal and epoxy material at the junction of the dome and the base of a metal burial vault.
Plastic and Polymer Vaults
Low weight of 120-140 lbs, can be stored in a nesting fashion like russian dolls, durability and warranties for up to 50 years, non-porous, resistant to water penetration and can withstand 5100 lbs per sq./ft.
Grave Box
grave liner design similar to a top seal vaults, 2 components (body and lid), may have holes in the bottom for water drainage.
Concrete Sectional
6-8 individual slabs of concrete.
