Noble Gases
A group of elements in Group 18 that includes helium, neon, argon, krypton, xenon, and radon.
Valence Shell
The outermost shell of an atom that contains electrons; noble gases have full valence shells making them very stable.
Monatomic
Consisting of single atoms; noble gases exist as individual atoms rather than molecules.
Boiling Point
The temperature at which a liquid becomes a gas; boiling points increase down the group due to larger atomic size.
Inert Gases
Another term previously used for noble gases, reflecting their low reactivity in chemical reactions.
Helium
A noble gas used to fill party balloons and airships due to its low density.
Xenon
A noble gas used in car headlights and as a propellant for satellites; known for producing a bright light.
Krypton
A noble gas used in lasers, flat panel displays, and as an insulating filler in double glazing.
Radon
A radioactive noble gas used in radiotherapy for cancer treatment.
Stable Elements
Elements that do not easily react with others; noble gases are known for their stability due to a full valence shell.
