Desktop computers
A ‘box’ or case (the system unit) containing the CPU, memory, hard drive, etc. Input and output devices such as a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse.
Laptop
Portable computers that use miniature parts with low power consumption, allowing them to operate on batteries; one complete unit, with the keyboard and screen built into the machine.
Tablet
Mobile computing device with a touch screen (no keyboard); uses a mobile operating system; often includes cellular technology for an always-on connection to the internet.
Two-in-one laptops
Laptops where the keyboard can either be removed or swiveled completely around behind the screen, allowing the device to be used as a tablet. They usually have touch screens.
Smartphones
A multi-purpose computing device that can also be used as a phone and has applications (apps) installed onto them
Convergence
Technologies and functions that required different devices in the past are combined into one single device that has all or some of the functionality of each of the separate devices
Servers
Computers that provide resources and services to other computing devices and users in a network, with powerful processors, larger amounts of memory and plenty of storage.

Fitness trackers, Printers, ATM machines, Specialist video and photo cameras, Household electrical appliances, Robots in factories
ICT system
A combination of hardware, software, data, processes and people – with the goal of collecting, processing, storing, retrieving and communicating data and information.
POS System (Point of Sale)
Slip printed for customer; Transaction processed; Price looked up and added to bill; Bar code read into POS system; Items scanned
Economic reasons to use computers and ICTs
More accurate and reliable than people; Fast – more tasks in less time; Work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; Cost less than people in the long run; Reduce the need for other resources – save on paper, communication costs, etc.
