Superior (Cranial)

Toward the head or upper part of the body; above.

Inferior (Caudal)

Away from the head or toward the lower part of the body; below.

Anterior (Ventral)

Toward or at the front of the body; in front of.

Posterior (Dorsal)

Toward or at the back of the body; behind.

Medial

Toward or at the midline of the body; on the inner side.

Lateral

Away from the midline of the body; on the outer side.

Intermediate

Between a more medial and a more lateral structure.

Proximal

Closer to the origin of the body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.

Distal

Farther from the origin of a body part or the point of attachment of a limb to the body trunk.

Superficial (External)

Toward or at the body surface.

Deep (Internal)

Away from the body surface; more internal.

Receptors (Sensors)

Cells or organs that notice a change in temperature, pressure, or chemistry.

Control Center (The Brain/Spinal Cord)

Evaluates the change and decides what normal range is.

Effectors (Muscles/Glands)

Act to fix the imbalance and bring conditions back to normal

Negative feedback

The body fights or reverses a change. If you get too hot, you sweat to cool down. If blood sugar goes up, insulin brings it back down.

Positive feedback

The body adds to or speeds up a change. Examples include blood clotting to seal a wound or contractions during childbirth
