Support the cause of; defend. Advocate, promote.

Sojourn

A temporary stay (noun), to stay somewhere temporarily (verb). Stay, visit, stop, stopover, live.

Tenet

A principle or belief, especially one of the main principles of a religion or philosophy. Principle, belief, doctrine, precept.

Succumb

Fail to resist pressure, temptation, or some other negative force. Yield, give in, give way, submit. 

Lurid

Very vivid in color, especially so as to create an unpleasantly harsh or unnatural effect. Garnish, bright

Importune

Harass someone persistently for or to do something. Beg, beseech, entreat, implore. 

Pervade

Spread throughout and perceived in every part of; to be present and apparent throughout. Permeate, infuse, imbue. 

Melancholy

A feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious cause. Desolation, sadness, sad, sorrowful.
