Psychopathology
The study of psychological disorders.
Psychological Disorders
Persistently harmful thoughts, feelings, and actions that are deviant, distressful, and dysfunctional.
Deviant
Deviates from social norms in a particular culture.
Distressful
Unpleasant or upsetting to the individual or others.
Dysfunctional
Interferes with functioning in daily life.
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5-TR)
A structured clinical interview for diagnosing psychological disorders based on symptoms.
Diathesis-Stress Model
A model that suggests psychological disorders arise from a combination of inherent vulnerability and environmental stressors.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
Characterized by excessive, persistent worry that is not linked to a specific stressor.
Panic Disorder
Characterized by discrete instances of fear with mostly physical symptoms.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
Characterized by unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and dysfunctional actions (compulsions).
Major Depressive Disorder
Intense negativity every day for 2 weeks or more, accompanied by various psychological symptoms.
Bipolar Disorder
Alternation between episodes of depression and mania.
Schizophrenia
A disorder involving disorganized and delusional thinking, disturbed perceptions, and inappropriate emotions or actions.
Personality Disorders
Longstanding patterns of behavior that deviate from cultural norms and impair social and occupational functioning.
