MA should be proficient in

explaining each of these procedures to patient

preparing patient and room

assisting provider with surgery

applying a sterile dressing and bandage after procedure is finished

when office surgery is planned certain procedures are followed before appointment such as

having necessary consent forms ready to sign

giving patient necessary preoperative instructions such as medications to be used and special skin-cleansing instructions

telling patient to bring a relative or friend to drive him or her home after surgery

instructing patient to leave jewelry and other valuables at home

calling patient day before scheduled surgery to confirm any special instructions

sterile field

any sterile surface on which sterile items are placed

when taking histories

make sure spelling and abbreviations are correct

for sterile field

don’t open instruments too soon

don’t open sterile glove pack for others

wear blue gloves

when disinfecting the tray
