The single purpose of fermentation
Regenerate NAD⁺ so glycolysis can continue. It produces no additional ATP.
Why the cell tolerates the "waste" of lactate/ethanol
Speed. Anaerobic glycolysis makes ATP far faster than oxidative phosphorylation, which matters in bursts of activity or O₂-poor tissue
Enzyme + cofactor: pyruvate → lactate
Lactate dehydrogenase; oxidises NADH → NAD⁺
Two enzymes + cofactor: pyruvate → ethanol (yeast)
Pyruvate decarboxylase (TPP) → acetaldehyde; alcohol dehydrogenase → ethanol (reoxidises NADH)
Why lactate is not a dead end for the whole body
Cori cycle: lactate → liver → gluconeogenesis → glucose returned to muscle
