Motion
The state in which one object's distance from another is changing.
Reference point
A place or object used for comparison to determine if an object is in motion.
Meter
The basic SI unit of length.
Speed
The distance an object travels per unit of time. Speed = distance/time.
Average speed
The overall rate of speed at which an object moves; calculated by dividing the total distance an object travels by the total time.
Instantaneous speed
The speed of an object at one point of time.
Velocity
Speed in a given direction.
Slope
The steepness of a line on a graph, equal to its vertical change divided by its horizontal change. Slope is helpful in finding a rate of change. When graphing motion, the greater the slope, the steeper the line, the greater the speed. slope = rise/run
Acceleration
The rate at which velocity changes. Acceleration is effected by the amount of force on the object and the mass of the object. The greater the force the faster the acceleration. The higher the mass the greater amount of time it takes to accelerate and slow down.
