Good morning/Afternoon Mr/s Abbot. Please introduce yourself to the court?
I’m Casey Abbot, I’m a friend of Coach Mac and a patient of Pain Away. I’m a certified public accountant, certified actuary, and certified financial planner. I was born and raised here, I know the ins and outs of this town, including the people.
How were you first introduced to Pain Away?
I broke my collarbone and separated my shoulder in a skiing accident. I went to Duke University Medical Center to get some help with the pain, but to no avail. I bore with the pain up until my thirties where I was even considering surgery. Until my friend Jordan Teva introduced me to Riley Schafer and Pain Away.
How would you describe Jordan Teva?
A very motivated and persuasive person with only two goals in mind, getting promoted and controlling some aspect of Hampton. Not necessarily the brightest, but they care more about being liked than anyone I’ve ever met, going to major lengths to get attention/affection, even going as far to spread rumors. A big “Go big or go home” type of person.
How would you describe Jordan and Schafer's relationship?
Jordan and Schafer had a close friendship. Schafer was the perfect twofer for Jordan, she was a big investment that could pay off greatly and a new business that Jordan could capture. Jordan helped Schafer get loans from the bank. Eventually, Jordan’s bank ended up foreclosing on Schafer and their relationship went downhill from there.
Describe Dr.Shafer?
Dr.Shafer is a good doctor. They fixed me up real good. They treated their patients with kindness and always tried to learn about them. Schafer always tried to find effective holistic approaches in order to treat her patients, although she prescribed opioids she was always mindful of it. Schafer got me fixed up BETTER than Duke University Medical Center. When they said they couldn’t help me. Schafer COULD! Schafer is better than Duke University. Schafer LOVES blue collar workers, he’s a martyr for the common man. Really for the middle class, very affordable. He made healthcare accessible for everyone, even people like me who worked for every dollar I could.
Describe Doc’s involvement with the community?
Doc was always warning of the dangers of painkillers and opioids to the community. She was invited to high schools to talk about it. She was one of our biggest addiction prevention advocates.
Describe Taylor Kelsey?
I guess I would use the word ambitious. Taylor was Doc’s assistant but you could tell that Taylor really wanted to run the place, and her and Doc fought like crazy. Every time I was treated by Doc we had good meetings and I was never rushed, but Taylor was pushing to make the place a factory for pain sufferers, while Doc actually cared.
Did Hadley struggle with her mental health?
Yes. Coach was struggling with the death of her husband. But Coach had really been all over the place her whole life. She was just like that. You never knew which Coach you were going to get at any given day.
From the time you knew Hadley were they visiting any other offices?
I saw Coach going around town sometimes on a scooter thing, running errands and going to appointments. Yes, Hadley visited Dr. Conrad and a few other doctors because she couldn’t alleviate the pain completely.
Do you think Hadley could have been taking something else during the time Schafer prescribed her opioids?
It’s a great possibility, she would visit other doctors frequently on her little scooter. A few days before she died she was complaining about the CVS computer after I took her home from a pharmacy visit. I walked in and there were pill bottles everywhere.
When you saw Coach before they died, what kind of state were they in?
They were obviously struggling. Her house was a mess, she didn't have the energy to clean. She would constantly mention the immense pain she was in. Still caught up in the old days, she had all her old trophies and memorabilia out.
Would you say Coach was responsible for her own death?
Yes, I truly believe that Doctor Riley did all they could, just trying to relieve pain for a patient, and in the end it was Coach’s decision to irresponsibly consume medication from multiple different doctors without consulting Doc.
