What is the definition of an observation?
Something you directly notice with your senses or measure; it is a fact.
What is an inference?
A conclusion based on observations and what you already know; it is not a fact.
In the context of scientific thinking, what are the five steps scientists follow?
What does CER stand for in a scientific answer?
Claim, Evidence, and Reasoning.
What is the purpose of the 'Claim' in CER?
It answers the scientific question.
What types of information are considered 'Evidence' in CER?
Observations, measurements, results, and data.
In CER, what does 'Reasoning' provide?
An explanation of why the evidence supports the claim.
What are the three components of the P-R-Q reading strategy?
P = Preview (look over the lesson first), R = Read (read material carefully), Q = Question (ask yourself questions about what you read).
What is the definition of matter?
Anything that has mass and takes up space.
What are the three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, and gas.
Name five physical properties of matter that can be observed or measured.
Color, texture, mass, volume, and density.
What is the primary requirement for a good science fair question?
It must be testable.
What are the three components required for a testable science question?
You must be able to change something, observe something, and measure something.
What characterizes a physical change?
The substance stays the same, though it may change size, shape, or state (e.g., ice melting).
What happens during a chemical change, and what are some signs it has occurred?
A new substance forms; signs include gas/bubbles, temperature change, light, or a new odor.
What are the four steps of 'The Thinking Bridge' in order?
When using classroom MacBooks, what question should students ask themselves?
'How does what is on my screen connect to my learning?'
What is a mixture?
Two or more substances physically combined where the substances keep their properties.
What is a solution?
A type of mixture in which substances are evenly mixed and a solute dissolves in a solvent (e.g., salt in water).
What is the rule relating mixtures and solutions?
All solutions are mixtures, but not all mixtures are solutions.
