nurse: assuming responsibility for conduct, consequences of actions. caretaker/caregiver. professional
patient: understands that nurse is safe/reliable/confidential/follows boundaries. has to also be cooperative in receiving care

active listening: paraphrasing, clarifying, listening, encouraging/questioning, validating
verbal: reinforcing, feedback, informing
nonverbal: body language (eye contact)
