Parietal Lobe
Involved in perception, spatial awareness, manipulating objects, and spelling.
Broca's Area
Region of the brain responsible for expressing language.
Wernicke's Area
Region of the brain involved in understanding language.
Angular Gyrus
Cortex area that processes symbols into reading.
Occipital Lobe
Part of the brain that deals primarily with vision.
Temporal Lobe
Responsible for expressing language and recognizing faces and emotions.
Frontal Lobe
Involved in planning, organizing, emotional control, personality, and problem solving.
Sensation
The process by which our sensory receptors receive and represent stimulus energies from our environment.
Stimulus
Any detectable input from the environment that our senses respond to.
Absolute Threshold
The minimum stimulation needed to detect a particular stimulus 50% of the time.
Cocktail Party Effect
The ability to focus on one voice among many in a noisy environment.
Amplitude
The height of sound waves, which determines loudness.
Frequency
The number of complete wave cycles that occur in a given time period, related to pitch.
Taste Receptors
Clusters of cells on the tongue sensitive to the five basic tastes: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami.
Olfactory System
The sensory system for smell, primarily located in the nasal cavity.
Kinesthetic Sense
The sense that provides information about the position and movement of body parts.
Neural Gate Control Theory
The theory that pain is experienced through the opening and closing of neural gates in the spinal cord.
Perception
The process of organizing and interpreting sensory information.
