Kasaysayan
A narrative of past events with a significant connection to a person, group, or community, providing knowledge about origins, experiences, and identity.
Salaysay
The narration or storytelling of events, experiences, or information in an orderly and sequential manner used to express and understand what occurred.
Saysay
Refers to the significance, relevance, or value of a thing, event, or experience, especially if it provides a lesson, meaning, or benefit to a community.
Ambeth Ocampo
A historian who posits that "salaysay" and "saysay" cannot be separated, for without both, it is not true history.
Babaylan
The community narrator and central authority of history in ancient times who acted as an intermediary to explain messages from spirits, gods, or nature.
Panahon ng Kolonyalismo
A period characterized by the suppression of history and the destruction of oral traditions, which limited the preservation of authentic Filipino culture.
Pantayong Pananaw
A perspective in historical study that uses the Filipino language, experience, and viewpoint to understand history; described as an internal Filipino conversation.
Zeus Salazar
The Father of Pantayong Pananaw who defined history as a narrative about the past that has meaning for one's own group using their own language and culture.
Historical Consciousness (Kamalayang Pangkasaysayan)
An active process of thinking beyond simple understanding where an individual relates ideas and experiences from the past to the present.
Historical Significance
The ability to identify why a specific person, place, or event is important due to its impact on the present and the future.
Primary Sources
Basic references such as letters, diaries, speeches, photographs, or laws used to build historical understanding.
Secondary Sources
References like articles, textbooks, or social media posts that discuss or interpret historical events based on other records.
Continuity and Change
The recognition of which aspects of society, such as the "bayanihan" spirit, have persisted over time and which have undergone transformations.
Cause and Consequence
The analysis of why events happened (causes) and what their subsequent effects (consequences) are on the current society.
Taking Historical Perspectives
Understanding the motivations and beliefs of people in the past within the context of their own time, rather than judging them by modern standards.
Ethical Dimension
The use of history as a guide to judge right and wrong, allowing moral lessons to prevent the repetition of past abuses or mistakes.
