What is the dermis?

A deeper, thicker, layer of skin made up of dense fiburous connective tissue

What is interspersed throughout the dermis?

Collagenous and elastic fibers, and some adipose cells

What does the dermis do?

Regulates body temp. and supplies nutrients to the epidermis

What are the 5 layers of epidermis?

1. Stratum basale

2. Stratum Spinosum

3. Stratum granulosum

4. Stratum Lucidum

5. Stratum corneum

What is the epidermis made of?

Stratified squamous epithelium arranged in 4 or 5 layers

What occurs in the stratum spinosum?

Mitosis occurs as the cell are pushed out towards the surface and begin to flatten out

Where is the Strantum granulosum located?

Superficial to the stratum spinosum

Stratum granulosum shape?

Diamond

Stratum Lucidum appearance and thickness

Clear and 2-3 layers thick

Where is stratum Lucidum found?

What is the Strutum Corneum composed of?

25 or more layers of dead cells which are filled with the protein keratin
