What is the brief History of Coin Street?

  • 1960s decline: offices and commerical developments - deline in residential population

  • Derelict land: 13acre site became abandoned and was targeted for commercial development - hotel - would displace many families

  • Coin Street Action Group - campaignes for affordable housing and open spaces

  • 1984 - Greater London Council helped the ation group to buy the land at a reduced price

  • Formation of CSCB: Coin Street Community Builders - non-profit group responsible for development and management

  • Secured loans from the GLC , Greater London Enterprise Board and private mortgages

  • Only local residents could join the CSCB ensuring community-led decision-making and long term stewardship
