definition
a sovereign state of which most of the citizens or subjects are united also by factors which define a nation, such as language or common descent
social power
economic, political and ideological, oldest form of power is violence, power can create control to have a more homogenised state
political institutions, power and authority are an instrumentality to get people to comply
power essentially allows for the creation of a nation state
nationalism and nation state
nationalist vs patriotic, nation state is an idea that can help achieve nationalism, nation states have strong interconnectedness, problems make people turn to nationalism, how is nationalism and populism linked?, political entrepreneurs have combined grievances into a narrative about getting rid of immigrants, minorities and treating their true nations people well
globalisation
seems to go against nation states as it prevents them from having control over their people, limits power of national government
slower rather then hyper globalisation is prob more beneficial
trillema
we cannot have hyperglobalizatin, democracy and self determination all at once, a shift to global governance would reduce national severity, national gov would not disappear but their power is limited
hyperglobalziaiton clashes with democracy because it seeks not to improve the functioning of democracy but commercial and financial interest, less focus on their people
there is always going to be a payoff somewhere
EU is a good example of how this kind of works but it is more economic then political power
