ariel’s realization
she noticed a profound shift in her perspective: her interactions with others were actively shaping how she thought and acted. Through her experiences, she learned two vital lessons
peer dynamics and adult dynamics
the insight: navigating shifting social dynamics isn’t just about surviving high school-it is preparation for future professional interactions
peer dynamics
group projects reveal the power of collaboration, but disagreements show how quickly conflict arises. the lesson - balancing asserting opinions with active listening
adult dynamics
when interacting with teachers and family, expression naturally pivots to become clearer and highly respectful
Social influence
a change in an individual’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors caused by the real, imagined, or implied presence of others
conformity
driven by the desire to align with in group norms to be liked and accepted
triggered by: internal desire to fit in
compliance
prompted by a direct request to avoid conflict or gain approval
triggered by: peer requests
obedience
toeing the line in response to a direct command from an authority figure
triggered by: authoritative command & power differential
solomon asch (1950s) the conformity test
setup: subjects placed with actors who deliberately gave obviously wrong answers in a visual line test
result: 37% of real participants conformed to the wrong answer at least once
insight: people often prioritize group acceptance over objective truth due to normative or informational influence
stanley milgram (1960s) the obedience study
setup: “teachers” were instructed by an authority figure to administer increasingly painful electric shocks to an acting “learner”
result: 65% to 80% continued to the maximum 450 volt level despite visible distress
situational factors and authoritative commands can completely override personal conscience
social perception
how we form impressions and explain the behavior of those we encounter
lens 1: dispositional attribution
assigning the cause of behavior to internal characteristics (personality, beliefs, motives)
the pbb example: judging a housemate’s behavior as their true inner self rewarding the one who is truly “nagpapakatotoo”
lens 2: situational attribution
assigning the cause of behavior to external events or environmental features
the classroom example: believing a disruptive classmate isn’t naturally bad, but acting out because the situation calls for it
social interaction
the verbal, non verbal, and emotional exchanges that create a reciprocal response between people
cooperation
two or more people working together in order to achieve a common goal or outcome. It is a process by which we combine our efforts
competition
an impersonal, unconscious struggle between individuals or groups for the purpose of satisfaction, often driven by limited resources
generation alpha (2010 - 2024)
born the same year the ipad and instagram launched. Shaped deeply by covid 19 and global connectivity
not a return to the old, but the start of a completely new landscape. The first generation fully born and shaped entirely in the 21st century
generation beta (2025 - 2039)
the newest generation, born into a word of artificial intelligence and deep technological integration
anticipated to be highly curious, deep valuing diversity, and inherently embracing of change and difference
paki
a prefix that modifies the root to convey joining or participating with others
sama
meaning to join
pakikisama
the emphasized importance of interpersonal harmony. it paves the way for pakikipagkapwa tao (shared inner self) and bayanihan (communal unity), aiding in survival, support networks, and shared academic resources
positive application
using pakikisama to promote positive collaboration, cope with stress, share resources, and help others succeed.
the boundary
true pakikisama helps people become better together. it should never stray into condoning misconduct, wrongful acts, or blind comformity just to “fit in”
