Renewable energy resources
a source of energy that can be replenished in a relatively short period of time
Hydro energy
the kinetic energy of falling or running water
ocean thermal energy conversion
OTEC
Ocean power
energy derived from the seas through means such as harnessing tides, waves, and thermal currents
Geothermal energy
energy the comes from the Earth's internal heat by the radioactive decay of isotopes
Dry steam power plants
simplest and oldest design where in it directly uses geothermal steam
Flash steam power plants
most common type used where in the hot water is pumped under great pressure to the surface
Binary cycle power plants
used if the water is not hot enough to produce steam so it is made by the passing of hot geothermal water, together with a secondary fluid, through a heat exchanger
Solar energy
energy from the sun which can be converted into electricity by solar cells or solar thermal systems
Photovoltaic cells
a solar energy cell, usually made from silicon, that collects solar rays to generate electricity
Wind energy
energy generated from the kinetic energy of moving air
Wind-driven power plants
facilities that use wind to turn turbines and generate electricity
Nonrenewable energy
resources that do not renew themselves within the human time frame
Coal
- sedimentary rock made up of solid organic materials which are formed from the accumulation of plant remains
- most sought-after energy due to its availability and it is relatively inexpensive
Natural gas
- it is the cleanest of all fossil fuels where it is a mixture of naturally-occuring, light hydrocarbons
- formed from the remains of ancient microorganisms
Fossil fuels
a natural fuel such as coal or gas, formed in the geological past from the remains of living organisms
Petroleum
a liquid type of fossil fuels produced by microorganisms
