Lymphatic System
Absorbs excess interstitial fluid and returns it to the bloodstream.
Lacteals
Absorb dietary fats in the lymphatic system.
Lymphocytes
Production, maintenance, and distribution of these cells are key functions of the lymphatic system in the body, aiding in defense against pathogens.
Lymph
The fluid carried by lymphatic vessels.
Lymphatic Capillaries
Begin as blind-ended vessels in the tissues.
Thoracic Duct
One of the two main lymphatic ducts.
Right Lymphatic Duct
The other of the two main lymphatic ducts.
Lymph Nodes
Found along lymphatic vessels and filter lymph; contain macrophages and lymphocytes.
Macrophages
Engulf pathogens and debris within lymph nodes.
Primary Lymphatic Organs
Include the red bone marrow and thymus.
Secondary Lymphatic Organs
Include lymph nodes, spleen, and tonsils.
Innate Immune Defenses
Fully functional without previous exposure to a pathogen; includes skin, inflammation, and protective proteins.
Adaptive Immune Defenses
Initiated when exposed to a pathogen; comes into play when innate defenses fail; involves B & T lymphocytes.
Antibody
Y-shaped proteins produced by B lymphocytes that bind to antigens to neutralize them.
Antigen-binding Site
The location on an antibody where an antigen fits and binds.
Active Immunity
The body makes antibodies against a particular antigen through natural infection or immunization.
Passive Immunity
Getting antibodies to combat a disease; temporary immunity, such as from mother to newborn.
Allergies
Hypersensitivity to allergens.
Anaphylactic Shock
An immediate allergic response; a sudden and life-threatening drop in blood pressure.
Epinephrine
Counteracts anaphylactic shock.
Autoimmune Disease
The immune system attacks the body's own cells; involves both genetic and environmental factors.
