What is the complete sequence of structural organization in the human body, from simplest to most complex?

What does the word "integument" mean, and what is included in this system?
Integument means "skin." This outermost system includes the skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and oil glands.
What are the main functions of the integumentary system?
Protects against injury and infection, regulates temperature, and senses the environment.
How many bones make up the adult skeletal framework?
206 bones, plus the joints between them.
What is the primary function of the skeletal system?
Provides the body's basic structural framework, protects vital organs, and works with muscles to allow movement.
What are the three types of muscle tissue in the body, and where are they found?
Skeletal muscle: Attached to bones (produces movement, maintains posture).
Smooth muscle: In walls of blood vessels and internal organs.

Lymph.
What are the primary functions of the lymphatic system?
Returns tissue fluids to the blood, aids in dietary fat absorption, and protects against disease via immune organs (tonsils, thymus, spleen).
What is the primary function of the respiratory system?
Takes in air, conducts it to the lungs for gas exchange, delivers oxygen to the blood, and expels carbon dioxide (CO2) waste.

How do the digestive and respiratory systems work together?
The digestive system absorbs nutrients, and the respiratory system provides oxygen; together, they generate energy to fuel body activities.
What are the 4 main organs/structures of the urinary system?

What is the main purpose of the urinary system?
Rids the body of waste products and excess water, acting as the primary mechanism for balancing fluid volume and composition.
What is the primary function of the reproductive system?

How is the Immune System categorized compared to other body systems?
It is defined by its function (protecting against foreign matter/pathogens) rather than a single structure, combining elements of both the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems.
What is the definition of Homeostasis, and how is it pronounced?
The state of internal balance within the body; the maintenance of physiological conditions within set limits
What is Negative Feedback?
A self-regulating control system in which the result of an action reverses that action to keep body conditions within a normal range and maintain homeostasis.
How does a negative feedback system work?
It is based on information returning to a source. When a condition strays too far from its set point, the body triggers a response that opposes or reverses the change to bring conditions back to normal.
everyday analogy for negative feedback?
Studying harder after receiving a poor grade on a test to reverse a downward slide and bring your grades back up to normal.
What is an effector, and what are the two main types of effector organs?
A muscle or gland that responds to a signal from the control center to alter body conditions.
What is a regulated variable?
A physiological parameter (like body temperature or blood glucose) that has specific sensors and cannot vary too much without causing harm to the organism.
Why is sweating considered an effector action rather than a regulated variable?
Because the body does not directly sense the amount of sweat produced, and sweating can vary enormously; sweat production is simply an action used to regulate the actual variable—body temperature.
What are the 3 essential components of any negative feedback loop?
Sensor: Gathers information and monitors a specific variable.
Control Center: Compares sensor inputs to the ideal set point.
Effector: Increases or decreases activity based on control center signals to restore the variable to normal.
In a home thermostat feedback loop, what serves as the sensor, control center, and effector?
Sensor: Thermometer (measures actual room temperature).
Control Center: Thermostat components (compare room temperature to set point).
Effector: Furnace (produces heat when signaled).
Signal: Electrical impulses traveling through wires.
Why are barriers essential for maintaining homeostasis?
They separate the relatively constant, warm, watery, and sterile internal environment from the rapidly changing, colder, drier, and microbe-riddled external environment.
What acts as the main physical barrier between the inside of the body and the outside world?
The skin.
What type of barrier lines the internal tubes of the body (digestive, respiratory, urinary, and reproductive tracts)?
A thinner, moister barrier called a mucous membrane
Why are the inner surfaces of the digestive, airways, reproductive, and urinary tracts considered "outside" the body?
Because they are continuous with the external environment and lined with protective mucous membranes.
What microscopic structure acts as the barrier separating the inside of a cell from its outside environment?
The plasma membrane.
What is Intracellular Fluid (ICF)?
The fluid contained within cells (the prefix intra- means "within").
What is Extracellular Fluid (ECF)?
The fluid located outside of cells (the prefix extra- means "outside").
What are three major examples of extracellular fluids in the body?
Blood plasma (fluid portion of blood)
Lymph
Interstitial fluid (fluid between cells in tissues)
What is a gradient?
A difference in specific physical or chemical values between two distinct areas (concentration, pressure, altitude, or temperature).
In what direction do substances naturally move along a gradient unless inhibited?
Downward, moving from areas of high value to low value.
What effect does a steeper gradient have on flow?
The steeper (larger) the gradient, the greater the rate of flow.
What is resistance?
All factors that oppose, hinder, or inhibit flow down a particular gradient.
What is the relationship between barriers, resistance, and heat loss?
Barriers increase resistance to flow. For example, skin (and thick clothing) provides resistance to heat moving down the temperature gradient from the warm body to cold air.
What general principle governs the movement of water, solutes, blood, and air in the body?
A gradient promotes the flow of a substance, while factors of resistance oppose that flow
What is the anatomic position?
The standardized posture used as a reference point for all medical and anatomical descriptions.
How is a body positioned in the anatomic position?
Standing upright, facing forward, arms at the sides with palms facing forward, and feet parallel.
Why is it important to always refer to the anatomic position when describing body parts?
It ensures consistency, accuracy, and clear communication among healthcare professionals regardless of the patient's actual physical posture.
What does Superior mean, and what is its opposite?
Superior means above or in a higher position. Its opposite is Inferior (below or in a lower position).
What do Anterior and Ventral mean in humans?
Located toward the front or belly surface of the body.
What do Posterior and Dorsal mean in humans?
Located toward the back of the body (the opposite of anterior/ventral).
What does Medial mean, and what is its opposite?
Medial means nearer to an imaginary midline dividing the body into left and right halves. Its opposite is Lateral (farther away from the midline, toward the side).
What is the Frontal (Coronal) plane?
A vertical cut made a line with the ears down the middle of the body, dividing it into anterior/ventral (front) and posterior/dorsal (back) portions
What is the Sagittal plane, and how is it pronounced?
A vertical cut made from front to back, dividing the body into right and left portions
What is a Midsagittal plane?
A sagittal cut made exactly down the midline of the body, dividing it into equal right and left halves.
What is the Transverse (Horizontal) plane?
A horizontal cut made across the body, dividing it into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
What is a Cross Section in histology?
A cut made perpendicular (at a 90-degree angle) to the long axis of an organ or tissue (cutting across a banana to make a round slice).
What is a Longitudinal Section?
A cut made parallel to the long axis of an organ or tissue (e.g., slicing a banana tip-to-tip).
What is an Oblique Section?
A cut made at an angle across the long axis of an organ or tissue.
How is the term "cross section" used in medical imaging (CT and MRI)?
It is used broadly to refer to any two-dimensional view of an internal structure captured across the body.
What are the two primary continuous spaces or cavities in the human body?
The Dorsal cavity (posterior) and the Ventral cavity (anterior).
What two subdivisions make up the dorsal body cavity?
Cranial cavity: Contains the brain.
Spinal cavity (canal): Encloses the spinal cord.
Are the cranial and spinal cavities continuous?
Yes, they form one continuous space along the posterior side of the body.
