Chemical formula
A combination of chemical symbols and numbers to represent a substance.
Chemical reaction
The process by which one or more substances change to produce one or more different substances.
Law of conservation of energy
The law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another.
Law of conservation of matter
The law that states that mass cannot be created or destroyed in ordinary chemical and physical changes.
Precipitate
A solid that is produced as a result of a chemical reaction in a solution.
Product
A substance that forms in a chemical reaction.
Reactant
A substance or molecule that participates in a chemical reaction.
Balanced Chemical Equation
A symbolic representation of a chemical reaction in which both sides of the equation contain equal numbers of atoms of each element.
Coefficient
A number placed in front of a chemical symbol or formula that represents the number of molecules.
Conserve
To prevent the loss of something.
Subscript
A number written below and to the right of a chemical symbol that shows the number of a specific type of atom present.
Endothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is absorbed.
Exothermic Reaction
A chemical reaction in which heat is released.
