The function of the skeletal system that provides a framework for the body and supports its weight.
Protection
The function of bones that safeguards vital organs from injury.
Movement
The ability provided by bones and muscles to perform various physical activities.
Blood Cell Production
The process performed by bone marrow that produces red and white blood cells.
Long Bones
Bones that are longer than they are wide, found in arms, legs, hands, and feet.
Flat Bones
Thin and broad bones, such as those in the skull, ribs, and shoulder blades.
Irregular Bones
Bones with complex shapes, including those in the spine, hips, and face.
Compact Bone
The hard outer layer of bone that is dense and strong.
Spongy Bone
The inner, porous part of bone tissue that contains marrow and blood vessels.
Periosteum
A thin, fibrous membrane that covers the outer surface of bones.
Pivot Joints
Joints that allow for rotational movement, such as in the neck and wrist.
Ball-and-Socket Joints
Joints that permit movement in multiple directions, found in the hips and shoulders.
Hinge Joints
Joints that allow movement in one direction, such as the elbow and knee.
