Stress
The feelings you experience in situations you find difficult, challenging, or frightening when you feel you can’t cope.
Stressor
Anything, an event or person, that causes or triggers stress.
Eustress
Good stress that prepares you for action, provides energy/adrenaline, and is usually short-term (e.g., speaking in front of a class).
Distress
Bad stress that exceeds your coping ability and is unhealthy, potentially causing illness, unhappiness, or depression.
Short-term stress symptoms
Faster breathing/heart rate, dry mouth, sweaty palms, neck tension, butterflies in the stomach.
Long-term stress effects
Chronic issues such as high blood pressure, headaches, ulcers, allergies, etc.
Cortisol
A stress hormone produced by fear that can contribute to anxiety.
Adrenaline
A hormone that prepares the body to react to a threat; excessive, long-term production can lead to chronic diseases.
Physical stressor
Stress caused by physical harm or danger, e.g., violence or sexual abuse.
Environmental stressor
Stress caused by the environment, such as extreme weather or pollution.
Personality stressor
Stress that varies with personality; some people are more prone to stress.
Social stressor
Stress from interactions with others, such as peer pressure.
Emotional stressor
Stress caused by emotions, e.g., relationship problems.
Why manage stress?
To prevent lasting damage from stress hormones and avoid chronic diseases.
Meditation
A natural method of relieving stress that calms the mind; often paired with deep breathing.
Deep breathing exercises
Abdominal breathing techniques that help relieve anxiety and stress.
Relaxation techniques
Methods such as muscle relaxation to reduce stress.
Assertiveness
Training to state feelings in polite, firm, and non-aggressive ways.
Coping skills
Practical strategies to manage stress, such as breaking tasks into smaller steps and using positive self-talk.
Breaking a large task into smaller tasks
A coping tactic that makes big tasks more attainable and less stressful.
Negative self-talk
Unhelpful thoughts that can be challenged and replaced with neutral or positive alternatives.
Take a break from stress
Pause activities and engage in relaxing or enjoyable activities to reduce stress.
Support network
A network of friends who help you cope in positive ways.
Stress journal
A daily log to identify regular stressors and how you deal with them, revealing patterns.
Say no / set limits
Learn to decline extra responsibilities when close to limits to prevent burnout.
Plan your environment
Control your surroundings to reduce stress (e.g., turn off the news, take a different route).
To-do list
A list of tasks with distinction between ‘should’ and ‘must’; remove nonessential items.
Intrapersonal conflict
Conflict that happens within yourself due to divergent goals, values, or roles.
Interpersonal conflict
Conflict between two or more people.
Conflict resolution styles
Strategies to handle conflict: Avoidance, Competing, Compromising, Accommodating, Collaborating.
Avoidance (conflict style)
Avoiding direct confrontation; changing subject or delaying discussion.
Competing (conflict style)
Pursuing one’s own needs at the expense of others (often aggressive).
Accommodating (conflict style)
Willingness to yield to others to preserve the relationship; low assertiveness.
Collaborating (conflict style)
Working with all sides to satisfy everyone’s concerns; win-win outcome.
Compromising (conflict style)
Finding a middle ground where each side partly gives in.
Cooperating (conflict style)
A blend of assertion and cooperation to help reach solutions.
Personal mission statement
A life-long statement of purpose guiding actions and choices; linked to the Golden Rule and Stephen Covey’s ideas.
Golden Rule
Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Portfolio
A collection of items showing what you’ve learned and can do; useful for interviews and showcasing skills.
National Benchmark Tests (NBT)
Assessments that help determine readiness for higher education and related opportunities.
Entrepreneurship
The process of creating a business to meet a need, potentially generating profit and employing others.
E-commerce (electronic commerce)
Buying and selling of goods or services over the internet; includes online advertising and transactions.
Small business
A business with relatively few employees and less capital; typically under 500 employees.
Innovative entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship that creates new or unique ideas to improve competitiveness and meet needs.
Design entrepreneurship
Generating ideas that are desirable, technically feasible, and financially viable to meet customer needs.
Social entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship aimed at solving social problems or creating social change while running a profitable company (e.g., a community bakery).
Cultural entrepreneurship
Business that leverages cultural products or heritage to create value.
Tourism entrepreneurship
Entrepreneurship in the tourism sector to drive economic development and innovation.
Fraud and corruption impact
Corruption harms service delivery, erodes trust, reduces economic growth, and increases poverty; bribery distorts opportunity.
Ethics
Moral principles guiding behavior, especially in the workplace; ethics influence how people act and feel about work.
Lifestyle diseases
Chronic diseases linked to lifestyle factors (e.g., cancer, TB, hypertension, STIs, HIV/AIDS, heart disease).
