Incentive Spirometry
A method of deep breathing that helps maximize lung inflation performed with a device called an incentive spirometer.
Mouthpiece Technique
The instruction for a client to place their lips tightly around the mouthpiece.
Ball or Piston Direction
As the client is breathing slowly and deeply, the component should travel to the top of the chamber.
Post-Surgical Indications
Incentive spirometry is used after surgery to prevent atelectasis and pneumonia.
Lung Sound Assessment
A clinical priority where the nurse should monitor for improvement in lung sounds.
Breath-Hold Duration
The client should be instructed to hold their breath for 3−5 seconds.
Performance Barriers
Clients in pain or those with dementia might be unable to perform incentive spirometry exercises.
Recommended Frequency
The client should perform the exercises 5−10 times per hour while awake.
Optimal Positioning
The client should be sitting up as erect as possible, ideally in high-Fowler's position.
