Ecumenism-
the principle of goal of promoting unity among the world’s christian churches
Heresy-
the deliberate and persistent denial by one who has been baptized a truth of the Faith taught by the church
Schism-
the refusal by one who has been baptized of unity with the Pope of refusal of communion with the members of the Church
Apostasy-
the total rejection of the Christian faith by someone who has been baptized
Hypostatic Union-
the union of the two natures in the one divine person, Jesus Christ
Protestant Reformation-
an interrelated series of schisms that took place from 1517 to 1648
Interreligious Dialogue-
the conversations and search for truth that takes place between Christians and those who do not believe Christ to be the savior (ex, Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, Hinus, etc)
Indulgence (from Fr. Mike Video)-
remission of temporal punishment (consequences) due to sin
What does sin bring into the world? Why does God then call the Church?
Brokenness and disunity; Calls the curch together through salvation history to restore the unity that was broken

WHY is the Church one?
Her source, the trinity is a perfect unity of three persons in ONE God—> if God is one the church must be one
→ her founder JC reconciled all humankind though the cross
→ her “soul” the HS unites all believers

How is the Church One, but also diverse?
God gives different gifts and the people who receive them are unique with unique rules conditions ways of life etc→ this is a reflection of the TRINITY
Can a non-Christian be a heretic, schismatic, or apostate? Why or why not?
No bc these are states that only a baptized member of the church can posses
Catholic understanding of Jesus’ personhood and nature
Uncreated persons→ the three persons of the Trinity are divine persons
Created persons→ human being= body and soul, angles= pure spirit (persons but do not have bodies)
Substance→ that which makes a thing what it is; its nature or essence; what a thing is
God is three divine persons in one God: Father, son and HS
1054 Schism: What is it? What were the reasons for it?
The pope in Rome and the bishop of Constantinople excommunicated each other.

How did the Protestant Reformation begin?-
began with martin luther (german priest) nailed his “95 theses” to the Church door in Wittenberg, Germany
What did Luther teach? (2 big things)?
1- Sola Scriptura: “scripture alone” is the source of Divine Revelation, 2- Sola Gratia: we are saved by “grace alone”.
What is the traditional Catholic teaching compared to luthers?
catholic teaching: scripture and tradition, 2- catholic teaching- “grace through faith and good works”--> we cannot save ourselves (we need grace) but we have to cooperate with that grace

a renewal of religious fervor within the catholic church, particularly in europe

→ resulted in new religious orders of men and women

Church Council from Oct. 1962-Dec. 1965, Called by Pope John XXIII, Did not issue new doctrines, issue anathemas (excommunications) or denounce heresies
How can we renew (NOT CHANGE) Catholic doctrine and apply to Modern Times?
IG FOCUS on Ecumenical Doctrines with other Religions, introduction of vernacular language in Mass (English as opposed to Latin), More understandable Eucharistic Prayers, Modern liturgical music, Priests face congregations, No more kneeling required to receive Communion

What does it mean to say that other religions have “elements of salvation” to the Catholic Church?
Other religions have parts of the truths (“rays”) known as “Elements of Salvation” but not necessarily the whole truth.
