Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA)
A government organization that recommends minimizing manual lifting in all cases and eliminating manual lifting when possible to prevent work-related injuries.
Code 4: Total Dependence
A dependence level requiring a mechanical lift or friction-reducing device and at least two staff members to move the person.
Code 3: Extensive Assistance
A dependence level requiring a mechanical lift or friction-reducing device and at least two staff members; specifically, 2 to 3 staff if the person is under 200 pounds and at least 3 staff if the person is over 200 pounds.
Friction
The rubbing of one surface against another.
Shearing
When the skin sticks to a surface while muscles slide in the direction the body is moving.
Friction-reducing device
Equipment used to reduce friction and shearing when moving a person in bed, such as during rolling or moving the person up in bed.
Logrolling
Turning the person as a unit, in alignment, with one motion, keeping the spine straight.
Dangling
The act of a patient or resident sitting on the side of the bed while coughing, deep breathing, and moving the legs back and forth in circles.
Re-positioning in a chair
The process of ensuring a person's back and buttocks are against the back of a chair or wheelchair for good alignment and safety, without pulling the person from behind.
