Ionic Bond
The electrostatic force that holds ions together in an ionic compound.
Covalent Bond
A bond in which two electrons are shared by two atoms.
Lattice Energy
The energy required to completely separate one mole of a solid ionic compound into gaseous ions.
Electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract toward itself the electrons in a chemical bond.
Lewis Structure
A diagram that shows the arrangement of valence electrons among atoms in a molecule.
Formal Charge
The charge an atom would have if all atoms in the molecule had the same electronegativity.
Bond Enthalpy
The enthalpy change required to break a particular bond in 1 mole of gaseous molecules.
Octet Rule
An atom tends to form bonds until it is surrounded by eight valence electrons.
Resonance Structure
One of two or more Lewis structures for a single molecule that cannot be represented accurately by only one structure.
Polar Covalent Bond
Electrons are shared unequally between two atoms.
